The city of San Miguel de Allende is located 274 kilometers from Mexico City and 97 kilometers from Guanajuato.

The city of San Miguel El Grande, currently San Miguel de Allende, was founded in 1542 by Friar Juan de San Miguel over 7 ravines inhabited by Guayules and Otomi Indians.

Its growth and splendor is due to the transit of travelers who headed towards the rich mines of Guanajuato, Zacatecas and San Luis Potosi.  The city was a key point between Dolores Hidalgo and Queretaro for the Constituent Congress ordered its name to be changed to San Miguel de Allende and conceded to it category of city.
